My roommate had made this a few months back and I really wanted one so I finally sat down and made one. A bunch of credit goes to him for making the pigs for me because I am extremely bad at origami and he also showed me how to make the leaves.
Here’s the link I gave my roommate for the pigs: Pig Origami!
First I started with regular equal sided construction paper. A lot of time went into cutting out the squares (maybe like 20 minutes tops). I used 14 pieces of paper for mine because I wanted it to look bigger so it went well with my room.
Here’s a picture of the cut outs:
My roommate had already made 2 of the pigs as I was working on this. He’s going to make me one more tomorrow. My favorite animals are pigs.
The leaves were made by first folding the square corner to corner. I measured an inch and a half between each line and drew them perpendicular to the sides. I then cut along the lines almost to the middle of the triangle, maybe about 1/4 of an inch away. I then created the leaves by opening the papers after being cut and alternating the opposing corners back and forth and stapling them together. The very inner part of the leaf was taped together. After you do that for all your leaves you want to punch holes into the tops for the string. Once all the holes are made you want to align three at a time with the leaves all facing the same way and staple them together. With your 2 three leaf bunches you want to thread a piece of string through them. I used good old bracelet making string in gold for contrast. Here’s a picture of my finished leaves:
I also stapled the sides of the leaves together. In the picture above, you can see where the two sides of the individual leaves are attached. Just line it up and staple. The bunch on the left I made using a set of 4 and 4 leaves the same way I made the first one. The 8 piece bunch went on top of the 6 leaf bunch to add volume. It’s also a good idea to staple the two individual bunches together once you line up the holes. Just make sure the leaves are all facing the same way. For whichever animal you choose to create, you want to put either one or two holes into the top so they’ll hang nicely from your chandelier.
For my cute little piggies, I ended up punching two holes so they would be as even as possible. That and because the first hole I punched was too far back): but oh well, it still came out nice. I tied the pigs onto the inner parts of the leaves. You want to space them out evenly. Here’s my finished product without the third pig:
As you can see, my pigs are still hanging slightly forward but that’s okay, they’re still adorable. I may or may not add another layer of leaves, it really depends on if it feels big enough and if I get more construction paper anytime soon.
Definitely experiment with what you like in terms of how big you want it to be, there’s really no limit as to the possibilities of what you can do. Eventually I might throw in some LED’s for fun but that’s not going to be for a while. But yeah, there’s your chandelier! Sure is the cheapest one I’ll ever own.
Happy chandeliering!(:
