Revolving Sushi

When we typically eat sushi, we’ll go to our nearby sushi restaurant, order 3 or 4 rolls (around 6-8 pieces per) and then we’re done. There are certain specialty rolls that are just perfect for dinner ! But sometimes we want a little more variety for our meal. This is where revolving sushi comes in. Our favorite place to go is Kura. They have many locations which you can see in their app for Android or Apple. In the app they also list wait times so you can check in remotely as you make your way to the restaurant. You can sign up for their reward program where you earn points each time you dine to redeem for money off your next meal and you can even place an online order.

Not all locations have the same items either. My personal favorite is their fried rice, but I’ve only been able to find it at the Sacramento location when we’re in the area. We typically visit Pleasanton the most as their wait isn’t bad and their pricing is good. The only other one we go to is Cupertino when we’re eating with friends. Typically once we arrive we’re seated right away if we timed the waitlist well enough. Sometimes the waitlist can run a little faster than the app states, so it’s best to call if you see your number is next and you’re still not within 15 minutes of the restaurant. Below is a screenshot of their app !

When you sign up for their email lists, you’ll get inside looks into their upcoming monthly items. You can also see this on their facebook page. They also post their upcoming prizes which we’ll get into a little bit later. If you see an item you’d like to try, you should go the first few days it starts. Once they run out of the item, they will not offer it anymore at that location. So far everything we’ve tried during their limited runs have been really good. I’m a huge shrimp fan as well, so you know I went after the jumbo shrimp shown below. It was like a swole version of Ebi.

Now for the fun part ! If you’ve never been to one of these before, you’ll be a little surprised to see all of the conveyer belts. This allows the food to rotate around all of the tables and back into the kitchen for refills. If you see a plate you like, simply pinch the edge of the plate and lift up so the clear cover snaps open. Please do not return the plate to the holder once it’s been opened as the food will need to be thrown out. From there, you enjoy your dish ! If you see something stroll by, but there are no plates left as they typically have 2 plates per item, simply use the small TV above the belt at your table to order whatever you want. It will be delivered on a separate conveyer belt straight to your table. Once done you’ll slide your plate down the chute under the conveyer belt.

Conveyer Belt

Note that this is a pay per plate service. Depending on where you go will determine how much it is per plate. Last time we went to Pleasanton it was $2.90 per plate. We finished around 30 plates, so our bill came out to a little over $60. They do offer some items that do not come by on the conveyer belts. Things like ramen or desserts will have to be ordered through the small TV and will list the price individually. These plates do not need to be inserted into the chute as they will not fit like the green ones do. Also, if you have any food waste (shrimp tails as an example), leave these on a separate plate and do not put them down the chute. Sometimes the plate can get stuck if it has food on top.

Now for prizes ! Every 5 green plates that are inserted into the slot earn you one step closer to a prize. Enter 15 plates to defeat the villain and receive a random prize ! The prizes will vary depending on what they have that day. My favorite is the block sushi. You can create well known sushi dishes out of little building blocks. We’ve also seen Sanrio, One Punch Man and Naruto prizes at one point. It’s a fun things to get after stuffing yourself full of food. Also if you like cakes, their Hokkaido Milk Creamy Tart is one of the best desserts I’ve had. It’s dense like a pound cake but not too sweet on top. I get one every time I go. That’s it ! We hope you’re able to try it out one day, you can even see their menu online if you’re not a huge sushi fan.
